Humphrey Gets Over the Hump

1st Win of the Season for Nick Humphrey

- Lincoln, RI

What originated as a sketchy day on the radar, turned out to be quite the opposite. Early morning clouds gave way to bright sunshine filled skies, and temps hovering throughout the 70's. In ideal the ideal weather, Kirkbrae Country Club was in exceedingly impressive shape. With fairways and tee boxes in pristine conditions, and the greens rolling perfectly true, there were plentiful opportunity for players to turn in impressive rounds. Nick Humphrey & Craig Bryden did just that, both turning in rounds of 77 (+6) with quite different ways of getting there. Bryden made 3 bogeys on each side, with the rest all pars for a very even-keel round throughout. Humphrey, on the other hand, had wild go about. Four bogeys and five pars had him turning at 39, in a solid spot to contend going into the back nine. He followed it up with birdies on 10, 11, & 12, giving him a chance to take it real low. However, he slipped up immediately and played his next three holes at +4. In the end, Humphrey posted a back-nine 38, for his total 77. With the back-nine card-off, Humphrey edged out Bryden by one and took home Low Gross for the event.

Our Net winner for the day was Ed McManus, who had one of his best performances of the season. His steady round of 40-40-80 (+9) was his first chance this year to flirt with a sub-80 score. His only real slip-up throughout the day was his double-bogey 5 on the short par-3 15th. With his possible round in the 70's slipping away, McManus bounced right back and made birdie 3 on the short par-4 16th hole. Overall an impressive 18 holes, and one that put McManus back in the winner's circle.

A huge thank you to Kirkbrae Country Club, who had the course in impeccable shape, and their entire golf shop staff, including Head Professional Mike Bradshaw, PGA, for hosting the event.

More golf to be played at our next event Tuesday, June 12 at Renaissance in Haverhill, MA!

Soggy Shelter

Rain No Match for Moynihan

- Charlestown, RI

Thursday's forecast was iffy to start, and proved to be a challenge as the rain stopped by during our visit to Shelter Harbor Golf Club. Sixty-six players teed off at the pristine Southern Rhode Island track, with hopes that the rain would stay away and nicer conditions could pull through. Unfortunately for the morning groups, most of their round was on the soggy side, with the first few groups playing through the rain and wind for the majority of their rounds. On the other hand, those who teed off on the later side got the lucky end of the draw. With rain clearing way to higher temps and pockets of sunshine, Michael Moynihan was able to take advantage and win in his first event of the season.

With double-bogey 7 on the opening par-5, and a bogey on the challenging third, Moynihan was off to a shaky start to say the least, and would be holding on to scrape together a decent round. However, birdies on the 6th, 8th, & 9th saw him turn at even par 36 on his first nine. The turnaround was certainly impressive to say the least, and Moynihan commented in the scoring area how bleak the round looked with the double-bogey start on a relatively easy par five. The back side was a glimpse of more consistent golf from Moynihan with 6 pars and 3 bogeys to card an overall 74 (+3). His low round was good enough to snag Low Gross for the competition; a win in his first event of the year.

Nipping at Moynihan's heels was David Holmes, who teed off in the first group of the day. He noted how difficult some of the weather he had to withstand was, and certainly was a deterrent to what could have been an even lower round. Birdies on the 3rd & 5th early on had Holmes hot to start, but a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 9th proved to be a turning point in the round. Even par at the turn, rain picked up as his group began the back-9, and Holmes' bogeyed 3 of his next 4 holes. His back-9 could not quite match his front, and Holmes finished with 76 (+5) to fall just two shots short.

A huge thank you to Shelter Harbor Golf Club, who had the course in impeccable shape, and their entire golf shop staff, including Head Professional Dave Tiedemann, PGA, for hosting the event.

More golf to be played at our next event Monday, May 21 at Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth, RI!

From Ryder Cup to New England Series

Holmes Does it Again

- Worcester, MA

The historic Worcester Country Club welcomed the New England Series Monday, May 14th. The weather made for an outstanding outing, with temperatures reaching the low 70s. This par 70 Donald Ross track is one of two courses in the nation to host the men’s and women’s US Open Championships and the Ryder Cup. The New England Series allowed amateur players from across the Northeast to walk the same fairways as golfs former greats.

David Holmes of Sutton, Ma stamped his mark at WCC claiming 1st firing a 72 (+2). Holmes capitalized on the par-5’s playing them at 2 under on the day. Holmes managed to stay strong down the stretch with 4 straight pars following a double bogey 6 on the 14th. Coming up just short of Holmes was Gavin Barton and Bradd Pearsons, who came in the clubhouse with a pair of 73’s (+3). Barton made an excellent birdie on 18 to look past his previous bogeys. With eight pars and one bogey on the back nine, Pearsons had a glimpse at first place but came up just short.

Two of the top 15 finishers had notable eagles. Nikolas Kroisi who finished with a 77 (+7) eagled the par-5 2nd and Daniel Bellacqua bounced back from two bogeys with an eagle 3 on hole 5.

Huge thanks to the Worcester Country Club staff for making this Monday a success. Thank you to our partner Turkish Airlines for their continued support all season long!

More golf to be played at our next event Wednesday, May 17th at Shelter Harbor Golf Club in Charlestown, RI!
